I think I would be a little kinder about the Hallicrafters list but
I generally agree. I think one problem is that those of us who grew up
with vacuum tube gear are more used to being able to build our own or at
least expect to work on it. I think one thing that has happened is that
modern gear has become very sophisticated and specialized. Special parts
such as custom IC's that become impossible to replace. We now live in
the age of disposable equipment. There are places that fix cell phones
but often they not only break but become obsolete, you are expected to
toss it and get a new one. OTOH, a receiver even as old as a Comet Pro,
can be made to work as well as it did when new and can still be quite
useable. I think that engenders a different attitude in the people who
are not familiar with anything older.
Resistors: I have heard this before. I don't know who Hallicrafters
got their resistors from but there were several manufacturers. The best
of the carbon composition resistors were the ones sold by Allen-Bradley
and sold by Ohmite. There was also Stackpole and IRC. Stackpole are
generally not marked but IRC have a distinctive look, I just never see
them in old gear.
Well, I am having my second coffee and may be just babbling.
