[Hammarlund] hq-145a specification

The Hammarlund dials from the HQ-120, HQ-129x,HQ-140 and HQ-150 all used the same
left hand dial. Late HQ-129x's 140s and 150s  added 15 meters, which was a new band in the
early 1950s to the dial.  If you have a 129 and can find the dial that adds 15 meters (I was able
to do this - you probably would have to find a 140 or 150 that somebody was "parting" out
to do this. Those 4 receivers had pretty much the same configuration and theory of operation.
The 120 updated many parts from pre-war (WW II) to posts war. and a few tube changes. The
140 was about the same concept of operation but was built with miniature glass tubes. The 150
added a Q- multiplier.  Of course the WARC bands  30, 17, and 12 meters were decades in the
future. One could plot the frequencies out on a graph; or get an add-on digital read-out. BTW
those dials all had the same part number for the LH dial and only 1 number difference for the
pre and post  15 meter dial. They use the same hardware and are totally interchangeable.

About 50 years ago I had another HQ-129x given to me.  The dials were all warped throughout
their diameter.  I could not find a replacement (no internet then), so I carefully drafted a replacement
dial. I had mechanical drawing in high school. I also added 15 meters. I found Press-0n letters in
the same font and size as the originals.  I then had a contact negative made and laminated it
between transparent plastic with some sitck-um. I took the warped dials off and replaced the
plastic dial.  I sold the receiver before a move.  Somewhere out there, there is an HQ-129 with
white on black dials, much like Hallicrafter dials.  LOL  I don't think I'll ever try that again. I probably
could do an even better job with CAD software which didn't exist then.  That HQ-129x had just
about every modification published about it up to that time.

I don't know and couldn't find any specs but did fine a good
PDF version of the instruction book including an insert for the
fixed frequency crystal local oscillator. Its at:
http://www.jamminpower.com/PDF/HQ-145.pdf
Much easier to read than the Deja Vu version on BAMA.
If you think there are problems with performance I suggest
you ask here. Meanwhile I am looking for something with actual
performance specs similar to the production notes book from
National which is on BAMA.
BTW, I am in the midst of working on an HQ-129-X. I have had
this receiver for several years but need to fix some problems.
Once I get them fixed I will post here for others who may have
the same ones.
It is essentially a very nice receiver but has some puzzles,
for instance, why did Hammarlund decide on the inside out dials?
I call them that because the low frequency band is on the outside
and the highest frequency band on the inside, just the reverse of
most receivers and just the reverse of what you want to get the
best calibration resolution. HQ-120-X is the same. I don't know
about later receivers in this line like the HQ-140-X.
