[Hammarlund] Re-Capping HQ-180A - Some Questions

Greetings to Steve and the List:

My guess would be that someone replaced the filter cap in your 180A once
before. They probably couldn't find a four section cap with the right
values in the universal replacement series carried by most parts stores back
when, so they put in the closest thing they could find and used a separate
axial lead cap for the audio PA cathode bypass.

The Hayseed Hamfest can should work just fine; you will have to do as Ken
suggests and look around the audio PA stage (6AQ5?) for a cathode bypass
cap. If you find one, look for an unused wire in the harness that may have
run between the original can and the tube socket. If it is still there and
has not been cut short, you can just hook it back up. If it is missing or
too short, you will have to run a neatly dressed lead between the tube's
cathode pin and the new filter cap 50 volt section.

Good Luck,
Jim T.

Subject: [Hammarlund] Re-Capping HQ-180A - Some Questions

Hi all -- I've got a HQ-180A here and and started the re-capping process.
The replacement power supply filter capacitor that I ordered from
Hayseedhamfest is rated: 65-45-45 (at 450v) and then there's a fourth pin
on the can rated 45mfd at 50v. The ACTUAL filter capacitor on my HQ-180A,
however, is rated 80-40-20 (450v) and there is no fourth pin. To add to
the confusion (and just to make it hard for me to trace a lot of this out),
the only manual I have for a HQ-180A identifies the filter capacitor (C82),
as a 60-40-40-40 at 450v. So this is wandering all over the place. So, a
couple of questions:
1 - Is that Hayseedhamfest cap a direct replacement regardless of the
difference in the ratings?
2 - Does anyone have a schematic for the version of the HQ-180A I have? I
realize there were many different production versions.

Thanks - Steve, KW4H
