Hi, Maybe this is off-topic, but................
Today, I found the second failed disk cap, in my long ham journey. I restore old receivers and vintage test equipment for fun. A couple of years ago, I found a shorted .001 disk cap in a lab quality inductance bridge. Today, I found a leaky (50K ohms) .1 disk.
I've replaced literally buckets of BBODs, brown tur*s, and several micas. I don't even bother to test these caps any more. EVERY paper cap in my 75A-4 was leaky as well as one mica.
I still have never found a bad dog bone (as found in my 51J-3), but ya never know.

PS: I wish I'd have kept all those BBODs. Man, I'd be rich!!!!! They would be on eBay tomorrow......

Ray,

You may have less trouble than you think.

You say that the static is present even when the volume control is all the
way down.

This means that the source of the noise is somewhere downstream of the audio
gain control.

The only things in that neighborhood are the audio amplifier and the output
stage.

Take a rather large (.01 to 0.1 uF) capacitor. Connect it between the
control grid of the output tube and ground. If the noise goes away, the
problem is somewhere between the volume control and the grid of the audio
output tube.

My bet would be a leaky coupling capacitor between the plate of the audio
amplifier and the grid of the output tube.

If that is OK the next place to look is the cathode bypass of the audio
stage.

Thanks for the heads up. Have had my license since I was 16, so I should be able to summon up enough ability and
smarts to try this. 50 years as a ham ... I should have learned something, but it's always nice to have the advice and
thoughts of other old timers... HI HI.

There is a pretty good AGC upgrade by WA8SAJ in the Sept 2014 issue of
Electric Radio ( #304). I did it on my 180 and I like the results. Also,
there is a series of videos on YouTube that cover the alignment of the
receiver.

I suffered a similar problem with an HQ-170 several years ago. I
fortunately found a break in the wire in the first level of winding and was
able to repair it without too much trouble.

For more serious winding damage, this web site might provide a little
encouragement and inspiration:

I am still talking with the estate owner about opening this up to the
public.
I should have answer in 24hrs. I did use a better camera with HD
capabilities,
still some very low lighting problems. I think the better quality video will
help the drool factor.

Anyone ever had to restring the dial CHAIN for the HX-500? The pointer
string is covered in the manual, but the ball chain that drives the dial
drum is not.

I am having trouble seeing how this is supposed to move through the
pulleys: nothing seems to line up. When I think I have it, it ends up
creating considerable tension on the line and eventually slips. I don't
want to strip the pulleys on the band switch or the drum, so I'd
appreciate any advice anyone might have to offer as to how it is
properly routed.

The rig is running well now!

A friend is looking for a Hammarlund ED-4 Transmitter.

Please send me a note if you have or know of one for sale.
