[Hammarlund] Speaking of Tubes ...

Hi

Some (mostly Russian) high power transmitting tubes prefer that sort of treatment, they can have have some odd issues.

In general it’s not going to help the tube’s longevity. A lot depends on how good the seal is. Most un-used “modern” tubes have pretty good seals. Heating them up and plugging them in and out is not going to do the pin to glass seal any good. If the seal is already marginal (= heating up the getter will help), the mechanical / thermal cycling may degrade that seal further ( = more gas gets in).

The getter works cold, but works better hot. Heating up the tube in a toaster oven for a couple hours before firing it up would get it “going”. It’s not anything I’d bother doing on a tube that goes into a Hammarlund.
