Another interesting tube story is that one about the tubes used in the TAT-1 
telephone cable laid between Nova Scotia and the UK.  There was a repeater 
every 37 nautical miles powered by the center run of coax.  The cable was 
laid in 55 - 56 and operational until the 80s as I recall.  The cable was 
abandoned in operational condition and as far as anyone knows, could still 
be used today.

The development of those tubes established improved standards that were 
later applied to all tube manufacturing.
