Anyone who is interested in the story of the development of the 
Proximity Fuse during WWII can go to his local public library and take 
home "They Never Knew What Hit Them"; I can't remember the author.  Hams 
were paramount in this coup.  The storytelling is rather dry, but the 
book is not very long.  A description of the theory of operation of 
proximity fuses is included.
