First, heat. I apply a soldering iron to a metal hex-wrench stuck down 
into the slug, after application of heat, I'll very, very carefully, 
twist the wrench just a bit to see if the slug is loose. It it IS loose, 
I then use a plastic alignment tool to adjust it.

If that doesn't work, then I CAREFULLY break them up, extract the 
remains, and put in "new" ones.
