[Hammarlund] Ultimate receiver??

Brian nailed it!  Ultimate is going to be defined by the user and most will probably change their opinion over time and the ultimate receiver for one mode or use situation won't be ultimate for another.  A R-390A has a lot going for it but for "band cruising" the SP-600 is a far better choice. 

My current overall favorite is a SRT CR-91 made by the Swedish subsidiary of ITT in the 1980s.  It is solid state with tuning steps down to 1 hz, direct frequency entry, and 100 memories.  It has 6 of the truly excellent Telefunken mechanical filters.  Audio is excellent as is control feel.  But for operational fun I really enjoy my Comet Pro.  For CW operation the WWII era RAL regen is a great choice.  Next year I will probably have decided upon a new ultimate :)
