I have a SP-100X, 200X (BC-1004), and 400. The 400X designation is when
there is an added switch for crystals for the HFO. Most 400's were shipped
with a cabinet and the 400X was usually rack mounted.
The 400 IF is 455kc and early production had 6F6's in both audio stages and
then went with 6V6's
Some basic temperature compensating was added to the 400 HFO that can also
be used with any of the earlier series as they all drift a lot on the higher
ranges. One of those SS VFO stabilizers also works well and then a digital
frequency readout is a nice addition.
IMO the audio has too much bass as the response is flat to well below 50Hz.
Its also rough on speakers that arent built for it and painful with
headphones. The output transformer is 500-600 Ohms for both the 200 and 400
plus a 8000 Ohm winding for headphones which can actually be as low as 80
Ohms per the manual.
The 3 front end tubes are very noisy which will limit sensitivity above
about 12-14mc. Ive made some changes to my 400 with more to come.
ALL paper caps including those in the little bathtub cans in military sets
must be replaced and many resistors will be well out of tolerance.
All will benefit from regulation of the HFO and BFO, either added VR tubes
or zeners which is what I use.
All PS, military and civilian versions are interchangable including the
SP-100.
