As to alignment, the IFs are no problem - any screwdriver will do.

 

The RF alignment definitely requires a nonconductive, nonmagnetic tool. The
Japanese make a wonderful ceramic screwdriver (sold through some US
distributors).
Unfortunately, it is too short to be of use in this application.

I finally made do with a 1/4-inch plastic rod sharpened to a screwdriver
blade at the end.

 

The SP-600 -- as is -- has reasonably good audio on AM.

The really worthwhile change is to add a product detector for CW and SSB.
