Subject: [Hammarlund] SP-600 RF Deck

I agree with all of this and sent much the same
material off list. I think an old type soldering GUN may be
more easily used for the ground straps, there really isn't
much room and I found I had trouble with a large soldering
iron. Hammarlund may have used irons with extra long tips on
the line.
I also suggested inspecting the tuning cap carefully.
I've found more than one where the stators were no longer
centered on the rotor. They must be centered exactly and
aligned vertically in order for the sections to track. If
they are not aligned correctly the frequency calibration and
tracking will suffer. DO NOT BEND PLATES. Its not necessary
and can't be undone. I have seen bent plates in a couple of
receivers and there is a web site which recommends it. DON'T
DO IT.
I have method of aligning the dial plates and pointer.
The pointer should run exactly vertically along the dial.
Take the dial and put some transparent tape like Scotch
Magic Tape so that it covers the line from the referece line
at the bottom near the low end of the broadcast band and
extends to the edge of the dial. Then draw a line on it
extending from this reference mark to the end of the box
surrounding the logging numbers at the top. Now, with the
tuning mechanism at the low end stop loosen the screws
holding the clamp for the dial just enough to be able to
slip the dial. Also, the pointer has two screws clamping it
to the slider. Loosen these slightly. Now juggle the
position of the dial and the pointer so that the pointer
runs exactly on the line as it moves up and down. When you
have that position tighten everything and make sure it works
using the band switch. Now, when this has been done set the
logging dial pointer so that it is at the marker and is
verticle. The logging dial is now set so that the pointer is
exactly parrallel to the marks on the dial, this requires a
little juggling of dial position and the pointer. The main
pointer, BTW, should be set in height so that it just comes
up to the reference line for the band. The reason for the
gunsight shape is to eliminate parallax, when you are at a
marking on the dial the mark will appear to be an extension
of the pointer. It can be reset with great precision.
     Enough for now.
