I'm replying so everybody can get this info. What you have there is a LATE 180A. The
serial number tag on the back is an adhesive tag that's stuck to the chassis on the left side.
That's one of the changes that occurred when Gianinni Scientific bought Hammarlund.
You'll find the same kind of tag on late 170A's and the S/N's are different.
I've forgotten the exact year but I believe that it was in 67 or 68. Robert Fowle had some info
about the serial numbers that Gianinni issued but I never got a copy. So, if you want a closer
approximation on the date, take the cover off the radio, and look at the 3035 oscillator crystal
that's in the corner of the chassis that's underneath the vernier tuning control. It's mounted with it's leads up
and you'll find a manufacture date in month and year in red on the bottom of the crystal. You
can figure that the manufacture date is 2 to 4 months later than the crystal date. Your serial number is
higher that mine here and I seem to remember figuring that my receiver was manufactured in
1971. I believe that both the 170A ane 180A were produced until 74 or 75.
I believe that Charlie Jedlicka may have gotten those S/N records from Robert when he
got rid of a lot of parts and paperwork. It was one of those things that was to get posted to the
Hammarlund webpage, but never made it that far. Hope this helps.
Thanks!!

Subject: [Hammarlund] Hammarlund HQ 180A
Hi listmembers,
I just found an HQ 180A, and what a lively radio it is. And even more
manoeuvre-room for the operators skill than the SP-600 has. I can see how it
got its reputation. It is in good shape apart from the fact that it is
missing its case, has a damaged plastic cover for the clock that is not
there, and has lost the first part of its name, i.e. the Hammarlund, the HQ
180A lettering is there.
Has anyone been making up new items to replace these missing parts? Does
anyone have advice on what to do about the case problem. I am tempted to
make a plexiglass case, but it would have to be quite ventilated.
The s/n seems longer than the ones I have seen mentioned in mails: 30530516
. As far as I can see, it might be made in 1968 or later. At least its name
plate on the back has Mars Hill as adress, and according to Osterman
Hammarlund was there between 1968 and 1970.
The name plate also has "S.H.A.P.E Cont No 8929-65" I am guessing
that this refers to "Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe" , based
in Belgium. The only intimation of a date found on an electrolytic points to
1965, but that does not rhyme with the Mars Hill location.
One other thing: either I have still to learn how to use the Slot Frequency
facility, or it is out of alignment. Shouldn't it be similar to a notch
filter?
Best regards, and 73s
