[Hammarlund] SP-600 tuning problems

I agree with all the advice given so far, but I want to add one note of
caution.

Whatever you do, DO NOT loosen, disassemble or other wise mechanically
disturb the main tuning capacitor bearings (front & rear).

It's Ok (and indeed desirable) to flood the bearings with brake fluid,
acetone, or whatever gunk-dissolving fluid you use and
then to re-lube them with white lithium grease or my favorite stuff -
waterproof bicycle grease.

Just don't take the bearings apart or fool with the end-play of the
capacitor shaft.

It's hard enough to get the tuning capacitor to track with the dial
throughout its range.
If you change the mechanical alignment of the shaft you will alter the
spacing between the rotor and stator plates, which will
foul-up all the work Hammarlund went to in designing that fancy-shaped
rotor.
