I want to thank everyone for your responses on and off list. A lot of good food for thought. One thing I'd like to pass along, I've seen a few different methods for measuring signal strength when aligning. I found that pin 8 of the 6H6 has a  -DC voltage on it that corresponds to signal similar to the method employed when tuning an R390a at the diode load. Besides tuning for a peak, if you don't have a sweep setup I guess you could plot out the levels to get an idea of symmetry.
