Subject: [Hammarlund] Thanks!
Hello All,
Thanks very much for all your replies to my inquires about the HQ-145. I
even learned how to spell Hammarlund!
Of course answers always bring up more questions like:
~ Silver mica disease?
** The deposited silver on a mica or ceramic substrate creeps over time and
eventually causes shorts. This can be heard as a short loss of sensitivity
or thunderstorm like static. This was cheaper to produce than discrete SM
caps.
It also affects regular SM caps of the old and later styles to an increasing
degree as its a chemical reaction. Some sets such as the 75A4 are very prone
to it.
~ 6C4 disease?
** In several brands it causes oscillator drop out at the lowest end of the
highest band and often several have to be tried until one works. I suspect
some component in the circuit is the actual culprit but its not an easy
thing to troubleshoot without lots of time.
In the HRO-60 Ive even had a 6C4 kill Band D only which is 1.7 to 4mc.
Something is fishy.
So, is there anything published on boatanchor restoration in general, or
Hammarlunds in particular?
** Nothing Id recommend in a publication but there are many brand or model
specific web pages and even forums
My other lifelong passion is woodworking in general, and making Spanish
guitars in particular. I teach these for a living, and as an adjunct I
desktop publish and print a booklet on the sharpening system that I have
developed. I've sold several thousand of these booklets over the years, and
it's been a fun project, and much appreciated by the woodworking community.
** I was reading your page yesterday, very nice and I even learned a new
word....luthier. I thought at first it was a religious group!
My #2 son is on his 2nd tour in Germany (Major, USAF) and has been playing
guitar since he was 12 and is now big into the Spanish stuff. He and his
wife travel there often. He speaks fluent German and Russian. She (1st gen
Greek-American from our home town) speaks Greek, Italian, Spanish, German
and French and they have a ball over there.
If any of you are interested in woodworking or desktop publishing, I would
be happy to send you a free copy of the sharpening booklet, and consult on
either. It's a good example of what you can do at home with stuff you
already have. I would love to see the lore that is obviously resident in all
of your minds get documented and distributed. Just email me your shipping
address.
** The only thing I do good with wood requires a chain saw...Ive learned to
accept my limitations. One of my uncles was an old school master cabinet
maker in the German tradition. He gave up trying to get me to even saw a
straight line much less any detail/finish work
But Im a good welder and body man....my other passion is 50's customs and
hot rods.
Carl
Cheers,
Brian
