Brian -
As you've probably already concluded, opinions about radios are probably
just as diverse as opinions about cars or women (or guitars, for that
matter!) I'll offer a bit of a contrarian view on the HQ-145 - if you
can buy one for $50, use it to learn some restoration techniques, and
have fun - why not? I sold one last summer for $125, so it's not like
you're overpaying, and for many of us, the process is as much fun as the
ultimate outcome. And there's nothing saying this is the last (or
only!) receiver you'll ever own - as you can also guess, many of us have
come by these opinions by owning different models and developing a sense
for what we like and dislike. Even "back in the day", some receivers
were known more for audio quality, some for selectivity and stability,
some aimed at cost-conscious buyers - yet many manufacturers managed to
sell quite a few, so it's pretty easy to find different models at
reasonable prices today to play with and enjoy.
