HQ-129X was the best in its price class at the time it came out. I 
have one of those also. I think it might suit you, even today. They 
go fairly inexpensively on eBay. Most hams don't know exactly what 
they are.

The only real complaint I ever had against them were those really 
terrible original knobs! :-(

Once they have been properly restored, you won't have to touch it for 
many years.

Another Hammarlund you might like is the SP-600. I have a JX model in 
the queue for restoration.

Sounds like you are a very capable sort. You wouldn't have much 
trouble restoring a good Hammarlund.
