Yes. I have seen that in at least one of my Hammarlund manuals.

If you have to stagger-tune the IFs, in my opinion, it is a lot easier. For most 
purposes, you're right, of course, but it sure is fun to watch the IF passband 
change shape! :-)

Yes. I've always wanted a motor-driven sweeper. They're fun to watch.

The modern sweep-function generator is cheap and easy to use. As I said, I 
use a cheap B&K model.
