[Hammarlund] HQ-129-X Question

On these older single conversion receivers I always use my Grundig YB-400 portable when setting the HFO. I program into memory the set points for each range (usually dial frequency plus IF) and this makes tracking setup very fast with no chance of wrong side tracking (as long as you follow the manual as to which side it should track). The receiver just needs to be fairly close so no direct connection is needed to hear the oscillator signal in the external receiver. An external receiver like this has many uses including nailing down which oscillator is contributing to frequency instability or hum and of course transmitter checking.

Use a counter and make sure that the oscillator is above the indicated frequency on the 4, not 2, lower bands. Especially on the 3.2 MHz to 5.7 MHz and on the 5.7 MHz to 10.0 MHz bands it is VERY easy to get the oscillator on the wrong side. Within the last couple of months I had an HQ-129X in for service that had exactly the same problem. Not only was the bandspread off calibration the tracking between the end points was not that good. It turned out that the receiver had previously been aligned with the injection frequency on the low side for the middle 2 bands.

Yes. This is true for the 129X also. We have discussed this in the past. The '129X manual may not mention this fact, but it IS a fact.

BELOW signal frequency on the two highest bands.
