you have to break the solder seal around the base.

I would suggest stripping the paint, this use a propane touch to heat things up enough

 to melt the tar and extract the core.  you will need to anchor the case while you pull up on the core.



I had to real seal one once. I needed the propane touch to get enough heat to melt the solder however,

it also caused the tar to melt and bubble up. I fixed that by immersing the body of the choke in water but

 left the bottom above water. The water kept the tar cool enough while I soldered it back together.
