I suggest you dis-assemble the entire radio, WASH the thing thoroughly  
and start at the beginning to make it right again.  Remove the dials  
and panel and meter. (I like to put tape over the IF can holes)  Get  
rid of all the grime and crud with a thorough washing in 50-50 409 and  
Ammonia. Rinse and dry well.  Then lubricate the mechanicals treat the  
switches and controls, and reassemble the radio.

Go to the Caig website and look for the "Internet Special" that they  
offer. For about $15 (used to be ten) you get a small quantity of  
three very useful materials.  The controls will get MCL (or what they  
now call Fader Lube), the switches will get De-Oxit in tiny  
quantities, and that will do your radio well.
