Hello, Gang:

I have been working with the subject receiver (which was
given to me) over the past couple of days.

It seems to be working quite well after a complete
alignment.

However, last night, while I was using it, the main tuning
knob suddenly became "disconnected" from the tuning
system.

The knob spins freely, and the dials no longer turn.

Examining the knob and shaft visually from under the
chassis, it appears that the two discs of the pinch-drive
have separated or "spread" apart far enough that the
celuloid dial slips between them, rather than being gripped.

Is this a common problem? If so, what is the preferred
method to fix it?

Secondly, the receiver has really terrible microphonics at
the moment, which seem to be centered around the 6AZ8
tube, NOT the 6C4. Is this common?

Lastly, I really don't like either the AGC system, or the
detector system. First of all, there really is no such thing as
a "linear" detector, but in addition, it seems to me that the
BFO injection is 1) connected to the wrong place, and 2)
there isn't enough of it.

Are there any really well-thought-out modifications to this
receiver available some where on the web?

I really don't want to reinvent the wheel if I can avoid it.

In my opinion, most modifications for any commercial or
military gear I have ever seen resulted in worse operation,
not better, but on the other hand, we most certainly must
have learned something between when this receiver was
first made and now.

Thanks, and vy 73,

Ken Gordon W7EKB
