[Hammarlund] HQ180 alignment 60KHZ

Many audio oscillators go to 200KHz and can be used for these low frequency
Ifs, such as used in the '50s era Hammarlund, Hallicrafters and National
receivers. I have done this successfully many times.

Mike:
Seems to me you could use the BFO and a frequency counter to do your low
IF alignment.
The BFO is a stable variable oscillator which should stay put for the
near term required for an adjustment.
I have used a similar technique on a Hallicrafters SX117.

Disconnect C125 (47pF) from the product detector and reconnect it to the
junction of C28-T5.
Connect your VTVM to the junction of L8-C44.
Set up the rest of the receiver as instructed in the manual.
Loosely couple the counter to the BFO.
Adjust T6 through T11 for max out as indicated on your VTVM.

Check your BFO frequency for 60 kHz before and after each measurement.
Adjust as needed.

great but needs some alignment. My Knight sig generator only goes down to
160khz. Any ideas on a cheap way to generate a 60 khz signal for the
associated IF's? In the past I just peaked the cans for maximum output with
no antenna attached. Not the best way to do things. I'd like to do it right
this time. As for the "sweep" adjustments, any way around having to buy
equipment to do that? I'd still like to get some wider bandwith on AM. But
it's a great receiver and I shouldn't complain. However my job recently
evaporated with the economy so I have a lot of spare time to spend with the
radios that I didn't have before. Go figure...Work and have money but
little time for the hobby. Laid off and lot's of time for the hobby but no
money. Must be a balance somewhere. 73's...Mike
