Thanks everyone. Too many replies to email back individually.
Well, it's been running a few hours )off and on) with solid operation on
15m....before it was essentially zero operation
on 15m.
I have noticed some slight variation in signal strength each time I turn the
receiver on; in that 160m and 80m will sometimes
peg the meter with the Xtal cal, and other times, maybe only 10-20dB over
s9.....so I still have some intermittent(?)
or alignment issues, but compared to what it was, it's a huge difference and
it's actually a real nice rig to listen to.
Thanks everyone.
I'll stop bothering y'all for a few days, while I scour the 'Net for a used
Tube Tester and test a few tubes on my borrowed one.
(I gave away a nice Heathkit one with probably 250+ tubes about a decade
ago.....SIGH......hindsight is 20/20 !)

I second what Glen said here. In fact, if memory serves, Drake's
suggestion
on checking tubes was to put them in a known good operating receiver and
see
if they work. I've been doing that with 6F6's and 6L6's for the antique
radio work that I do. Testers find shorts, gas if it's real bad and open
filaments. After that, it can be plug it in and see if it plays.

This is exactly the reason that I say the best tube checker in the world
is
the unit itself. I have seen a lot of occasions where a tube would check
"good" in a tube tester and not work at all in the radio. Then other
tubes
check bad in a tube tester and work fine in the radio.

Today, a friend @ work loaned me his Mercury 202 tube tester and gave me a
brand new 6C4 tube (which tested quite good, but not FULL scale on the
meter. (maybe 80-90%..)
I popped in the good tube and now 15m is alive with Xtal Cal signals and
has
been for 1/2 hour...........now I have jinxed myself I know it. After I
type this email and hit <send>,. 15m will die for sure.
I tested the old 6C4 tube and it also tests good, but a little lower.
(60-70% on the scale)....
