That'd be my read too, although Hammalund was hardly consistent in it's
cabinet paint choices and I'm sure I've seen black also, although no way
to tell if it was stock or not. The wrinkle on my 129X has a finer
grain than what we normally think of vis 30's era wrinkle, and a gray
overspray over a base coat of a textured paint might produce a pretty
similar appearance.
Personally, I really like the smooth hammertone finish of the HQ-140X
better. I'm a big fan of the Rustoleum hammered metal products, check
out: http://www.rustoleum.com/Product.asp?frm_product_id=21&SBL=1
I thought the rattle can version was great until I tried the stuff in
quarts, it goes on thick and smooth even with a brush and looks great.
I'm not sure about how it would work with spray application, you're the
expert there Carl, but just another option to consider. Might not be
original but very acceptable IMHO.
