Greetings to the list:
I will throw in my $.02 worth on replacing micas inside IF cans. I had
an intermittent crackle on CW in my HQ-129 which turned out to be the mica
inside the BFO can. I tried to replace this cap by removing all vestiges
of the old cap's leads from the terminal, and ended up destroying the
prepared end of the BFO coil wire.
Now, the HQ-129 BFO coil is a Pi-wound coil wound with Litz wire, which
is the very devil to solder to. I was unable to do it, so I ended up
having to re-wind the BFO coil using a scramble-wound technique and
conventional magnet wire. It works well now, but I will never again
attempt to solder directly to a terminal that also contains a Litz wire coil
lead.... I will cut the old cap out and use the hook splice technique to put
the new one in.
On a completely unrelated subject, is there a list like this one for Swan
folks? I some questions about a couple of Swan 350's I am restoring.
73,
Jim T.
