[Hammarlund] Recapping an SP-600 JX-6

Hi Bob,
Sounds like you're in great shape. Hammarlund used disc ceramics for
all the bypass & the coupling caps after about ser. no. 17,500. Either they
realised the paper BBOD's were failing, or they ran out of them, or ???.
Anyway, mylars would be nice, but disc ceramics are fine for coupling. Some
folks like to use Orange Drops, which are polyester or polyether, depending
on type no., but they won't make any difference as bypasses, and probably
none as coupling. I have used OD's in the rf deck for coupling sometimes,
paticularly if I'm doing it for someone else who has a preference.
The 1600v rating is overkill, but surely does no harm, they're probably
a bit larger than 1000v, and actually 600v would suffice as the B+ is less
than 400v in the SP-600.
I'm sure the problems you noted will disappear once you have finished
the job. Ray Vasiek's article is a great tutorial to follow. If you have
any questions along teh way, drop me a line.

Subject: [Hammarlund] Recapping an SP-600 JX-6
I'm all set to begin to recap the JX-6 I bought last week (when my caps
arrive) and will be following the directions of the article Ray Visek W2EC
from The hammarlund Historian wrote, he mentions using 3 Mylar film caps for
coupling along with ceramic discs for the rest. The ceramic caps I bought
are 1600V. Are the mylar film caps necessary for bypass caps or can I use
the ceramics or is there another type that would work?
I had the radio on for several hours and all bands worked fairly well
although the RF control would not shut off the audio when it was on 0
although the SS meter went down to 0. The SS meter only went to +6, a little
less than half way on strong local signals. The dial was right on everywhere
though. I have done no further checking as of yet. I really don't want to
turn it on again as it is full of Black Beauties and some are cracked.
