[Hammarlund] Recapping my SP 600 JX17

Hi John,
    It's me again.
Starting from the bottom and working back, maybe --
1. The SX-28 is a bear to recap, partly because most of the resistors will
be bad too, and so much disassembly is reqd. I've done several of them, and
many SP-600's, I'd much rather do the SP-600's.
2. Use .01's, poly or disc ceramic, for all uses. Some of us will use
Orange Drops (or poly) for the few cases where the use is a coupling cap,
like about 3 in the RF deck, none in the turret modules. Hammarlund, about
the time they realised BBOD's were what they are, went to 0.01 disc ceramics
for all places where 0.01 or 0.022 was called for, and they noted that in a
manual, the -JX-17 I think.
3. Nothing is going to jump out and fly away whenever you unscrew any
covers. I'm sure the guy was talking about the curved, flat, spring clips,
2 of which hold each turret module in place. I find the best method of
removal and replacement for them is to grab them in the center with a pair
of curved hemostats and slide them out. Easier done than said. If you do
happen to lose one or 2, Andy Moorer used to have some available, probably
still does.
4. Ray Vasek's article is prety much all encompassing on recapping. It's
been a few mo.s since I last read it, not sure if he covered the removal of
the RF deck ( one of the manuals does), or the steel ball that can be lost
from the main tuning cap tuning mechanism. Or, not sure he recommends the
removal of the side panels, one at a time, particularly the left one to get
to the caps under the selectivity switch.
5. Don't forget the ones in the "pod" on the side of the RF deck. You'll
have to drop the filter chokes and FCU to get to it.
Hope that covers all you asked. Let me know if there are any other
stumpers.

Al, W8UT
