[Hammarlund] Recapping my SP 600 JX17

I call on my GREAT friend W8UT who always comes
through with good answers to the often goofy questions
I have.

I have W2EC's article on recapping the SP 600 and have
read it. My inquisitive "weak mind" still has a couple
of questions.

A ham friend in Texas WARNED me about springs on the
turret and said that if I am not careful, the springs
will get away from me and go flying into unobtanium. I
have not removed the cover and am very leery of
removing anything now. Those of you, who have redone
the turret black beauties, may be able to give good
advice and help prevent me from letting the "guts" fly
out of my SP 600 JX17 receiver. If I lose parts, I
might just have to junk it out and that would break my
feeble heart. I have a heart that matches my brain.

Another question is about capacitors. I know from the
recapping article that some use disc ceramic and some
use either or both .01 and .02 capacitors. I have a
supply of fresh Xicon "yellow" caps which I believe to
be poly axial lead caps that are .01 mfd.@ 630 vdc.
Is there a significant difference in practice whether
one uses "orange drops", disc ceramics or the "yellow"
poly Xicon caps?????

Your knowledge based on your training and actual
electronic experience will be greatly appreciated.

And also, will those of you who have recapped both
Hallicrafters SX 28A and the SP 600 share your
experience and knowledge with me as to how the degree
of difficulty between the two receivers compare and
whether either or BOTH will put me in the loony bin if
I attempt to re-cap them. Thanks and 73, John, K5PGW
