[Hammarlund] Recapping an SP-600

hi Bob,
Oh, you're into lots of fun. SP-600 refurb is a good test of endurance
and fortitude, but with a great reward at the end. Ray's article is a geat
help for a first-timer, as well as for anyone.
A good solder sucker comes in handy right there, but most of the
handheld spring-type ones are too fat to get in there. Sometimes those
wires to the cap sections are twisted onto the cap terminal more than
"nice". I've sucked the solder off them and used a pr of curved hemostats
to unwrap it. But, if you cut it off and splice on a short piece it won't
make any difference to frequency or tracking, so do it rather than risk
breaking something (like your temper).
    A cupla tips --
1. when you unsolder the wires in the "pod" to remove the RF deck, mark
them well, and take notes of which color goes where. A good resolution
color pic helps when going back together.
2. When you replace caps in teh RF deck makes sure you don't block the
access for a tuning tool down thru it.
3. When you get to the selctivity switch area, remove that side panel, it
makes access much easier.
4. Follow your progress on the schematic and understand what/where each cap
is.
5. have fun

I'm trying to unsoldier the wires from the RF deck that go to the tuning
capacitors at the tuning cap end and am having a really hard time, I don't
suppose you can just clip them at the tuning cap end can you and extend them
a bit after or would that throw off the radio? I got the ground straps
unsoldiered but also with a LOT of difficulty. I'm using a Weller 100/140
watt gun so it should be working, unless they're wrapped about ten times
around the lugs. I'm following Ray Vasek W2EC's method from the Hammarlund
Historian, what a PIA! hi! His method is good, I mean the whole process.
Any sage wisdom from you people who are more experienced than me?
