[Hammarlund] Recapping an SP-600

I'm trying to unsoldier the wires from the RF deck that go to the tuning capacitors at the tuning cap end and am having a really hard time, I don't suppose you can just clip them at the tuning cap end can you and extend them a bit after or would that throw off the radio? I got the ground straps unsoldiered but also with a LOT of difficulty. I'm using a Weller 100/140 watt gun so it should be working, unless they're wrapped about ten times around the lugs. I'm following Ray Vasek W2EC's method from the Hammarlund Historian, what a PIA! hi! His method is good, I mean the whole process.
Any sage wisdom from you people who are more experienced than me?
