[Hammarlund] Cleaning Old Radios

WD 40 or Water Displacement 40 is an excellent protectant against humidity. It is indeed an excellent water displacement agent and I have used it to protect the surface of a chassis against the inclements of a high humidity environment in my place. Believe me, it does the job. It is also good in removing old caked grease and oil before using a good lubricant. For contacts I have found nothing better than Deoxit.

Carl is correct in that wd40 is not a lubricant nor much of anything else for that matter. It will, however, displace water. Very few radios have much in the way of unprotected metal in them, and there, maybe shellac or clear lacquer is the best bet. Good quality oil is what is needed for switch detents, couplings and bearings. Contacts should be treated with alcohol, in the case of Tek equipment, or a plastics safe contact cleaner or deoxit.
