[Hammarlund] Yaesu Rotor Problem

I have "narrowed down" the problem source.
Unfortunately, it seems to be at the rotor end and not
the control box end. I took resistance measurements
at a "splice" in the control cable which is located
near the bottom of the tower (took loose the cable
back into the shack). The Yaesu uses 5 wires. Of
these 2 are used for the motor and 3 go to the
indicator potentiometer. I had to splice the wire
when a squirrel decided to make a meal out of the
wire.
The 3 wires should be completely separate from the 2
wires. However, I am getting a resistance between all
5 wires. What I think is that the weatherproofing on
the connector that goes into the side of the rotor
itself has become compromised and corrosion has built
up causing the resistance (not a short but around 100
ohms). I am going to have to climb the tower and
bring the rotor and the connector to the ground for a
complete cleaning.
The control wire has been in use for almost 35 years
at this location and for about 5 years before that in
another house in which I lived in this particular city
before purchasing the present abode. I am going to
replace the wire while I am "at it"! The wire "seems"
to be OK, but 40 years is definitely a LONG time for
use.

I have no experience with Yaesu rotors, but there is a
lot of info on their various problems in the
tower-talk archives. The mailing list addr is:
towertalk at contesting.com I am not quite sure how to
access the archives, however.
