If you have a D-104 microphone with the optional
preamplifier it works fine with the 600 ohm impedance
of the "newer" equipment. What I did with my D-104
was to install a switch in the base that allows the
preamplifier to be put in and out of the circuit.
Transmitters like my Collins 32S-3 and Hammarlund
HX-50A "prefer" the high impedance cartridge to be fed
"direct" (don't really like the preamplifier) whereas
I have other units that definitely work better with
the preamplifier.
Since I don't use any of my Motorola FM equipment any
more I don't need a low impedance (like under 20 ohm)
microphones. Remember that the "modern" equipment is
generally "medium" impedance (like around 600 ohm) for
the microphone circuits.
Bob Heil sells all sorts of microphones, elements,
matching transformers, etc., and gets a "pretty penny"
for his items. Since I am a firm believer in the
principles of the conservation of my finances and
labor (you can read "cheap and lazy") if I find a
cheaper way of doing things that works just as well
as, and in many cases better than, more expensive
things I generally employ those methods. Not everyone
can justify what Heil gets for his items.

Bob Heil makes a kit for the installation of one of
his dynamic elements in a D-104. It is called an
HC-104 and is $59.
http://www.heilsound.com/amateur/hcelements.htm This
is a lot more $ than a crystal element, but makes a
defunct D-104 into a great, but low Z, dynamic mic. To
use it with boat anchor gear, you will need to get his
XT-1 transformer or build a simple preamp.
I have been using an Heil HC-5 element in an old
Astatic 10 DA case with G-stand as my main mic for
years and it has worked great! I prefer it to most of
the newer designs.
