Unless the tuning capacitor has been physically damaged, it seems unlikely  
that the capacitor itself has changed.  The first thing I would check,  after 
bypasses, etc, is whether the dial reads correctly when the capacitor is  fully 
meshed against the stop.  I know the SP-600 has a mark on the dial to  
indicate the stop.  If the mechanical drive has been messed with, the  capacitance 
will be off at all points, and alignment will not correct it at all  points.  
Fortunately, I've been able to align my SP-600 to within a dial  pointer width 
at almost all frequencies.  Good enough for me.
