It sounds to me as though Julian is using the so-called "visual method"
of alignment, which, as far as I'm concerned, is the ONLY way to
properly align a multi-stage IF strip.
The method requires a sweep generator and an oscilloscope.
I've used the method in the past, and although the first time set-up was
difficult for me, since it is not "intuitively obvious", once I had it working
properly, it was a real eye-opener concerning how easy it was to get
near perfect IF alignment.
One "secret" is that the sweep rate must be as slow as you can make it,
which requires either a darkened room or a 'scope with a long-
persistence trace.
