Duane,
I no longer have my HW-202, nor the docs, but can say that it came with
a high-Z crystal mic that would also work with the HW-101 I had. It was
not amplified, just a crystal element.
There is likely a deviation or gain control in there and one possibility
would be that a previous owner used an amplified mic and reduced the
gain to compensate.
I would also check for mic lead connectivity since the wires often break
(25 years old?).
