[Hammarlund] Round vs octagon Power trannies?

Hi,

Today I was asked a question that I can't answer (You got questions, I got 
dumb looks
;-)

Anyway, why do some SP-600's have round power transformers while others are 
octagon shaped (the two presently here are of the latter design).  Is it a 
time period thing (early vs. late) or is something else involved, or did they 
just use whatever they had at random?  I would suspect it's a time thing, but 
that would be pure conjecture on my part.
