Joe,

        I'm not sure your receiver is fully up to specs.  I've not found the 
SP-600 to need a preamp or to be noisy.  It's possible your noise level is 
coming from your preamp.  Have all your caps been replaced...even in the RF 
deck.  You can also hand select tubes in the RF and IF sections to minimize 
noise and optimize sensitivity.

It's a great receiver and when up to spec performs very well.  Not sure what 
other receivers you are comparing it with.

Definitely not a SSB receiver though...
