Bob, My Crown IC-150 pre-amp has five high level inputs (two auxillary
inputs, two tape inputs, and one tuner input). The HQ-180 is in aux one and
sounds muddy on AM but fairly decent on SSB. The HQ-110 is plugged into aux
two and sounds fantastic. The StarRoamer is plugged into the tuner input and
sounds pretty good. The Hallicrafters SX-110 is plugged into the tape two
input and has good audio as well. According to my Crown owner's manual, the
impedence for all five high level inputs is 100K ohms. The gain from these
inputs is set at 20.8db. (i.e. with the pre-amp volume set at maximum, .5
volts in will produce 5.5 volts at the main outputs, which feed the inputs
on the Denon power amp. The IC-150 is a very high end audio product which
handles signals with virtually no distortion or coloration. That's why I own
it. I wouldn't consider making any internal mods to it. Perhaps it's
possible that the HQ-180 doesn't like 100K ohm high level audio inputs. But
that value is pretty much standard with most stereo pre-amps. Additional
thoughts from you or others on this list are always interesting and great
food for thought...Mike
