[Hammarlund] HQ-170AC Clock Redux

Hi all,

About 6 months to a year ago (I can't remember just when) I re-oiled a
Hammarlund Telechron clock that refused to run. It is still running and
keeping accurate time. Here is what I did: I Removed the copper rotor
assembly and drilled two 1/16th inch holes in the back, one near the top
and the other near the bottom. I Put a spacer over the drill bit so only
about 1/16th inch protrudes, to prevent drilling too deep. The theory was
to let air escape one hole while fluid entered the other. I submerged it
about 1/4 way into alcohol and sloshed it around a bit and heated it with
a heat gun until it was too hot to handle, in hopes of softening any
caked oil or grease. I poured this out and refilled it with alcohol,
sloshed it around again and poured that out. Then I heated it again to
drive any remaining alcohol out and let it set in the sun for a day.
Next, I soldered the bottom hole closed and ran a light oil down a dental
pick into the top hole. About 1/2 the oil didn't make it into the hole
but I think I got 1/2 a cc into it. Then I soldered the top hole closed,
shook it around a bit to distribute the oil inside, and re-installed it.
It is still running.

One suggestion is to find another way to seal the holes as the copper
rotor is an excellent heat sink and you have to get it really hot. I hope
this helps somebody. Thanks.
