My HQ-170 and HQ-180 have grey paint but my HQ-145 has black around the
frequency dials. Otherwise, I've three different colors of grey cabinet
paint on three radios.

FWIW, I like the way the black looks on the 145!

         I can't see it to be sure, but that was something that Hammarlund
did,
just before they went to the A series of receivers.  The 180A/170A/145A did
have a black escutcheon.  It may be that it's original and not a
repaint.  I will also
say that it's an accepted repair if your escutcheon has lost a bunch of
paint,
because there were at least 4 different colors of grey paint that were used
for that.
