         I can't see it to be sure, but that was something that Hammarlund did,
just before they went to the A series of receivers.  The 180A/170A/145A did
have a black escutcheon.  It may be that it's original and not a 
repaint.  I will also
say that it's an accepted repair if your escutcheon has lost a bunch of paint,
because there were at least 4 different colors of grey paint that were used 
for that.
