Why do you think that the military bought so many of
the JX versions. When you crystal control the
osciallator they are "rock" solid! When you use the
variable frequency control they are not so "rock"
solid. Since most military use was on fixed
frequencies, and since the JX versions of the SP-600
were able to be crystal controlled, there were a lot
of them bought. Other than the tendency to drift
around a bit, they were good receivers. Also, on CW
or RTTY, using crystal control, they would stay in use
for months and months at a time.
But, when using the variable frequency control, their
long-term stability was not that good. Acceptable on
AM, but not necessarily on RTTY or CW.

As far as the statement about SP-600 being "too
drifty", this is just another old wives' tale. Would
the government really have procured that many if it
was really THAT bad? Not likely.
