[Hammarlund] HQ-100 CW and SSB reception

I recently purchased an HQ-100 "fixer upper", and have the receiver working
pretty good to the point where I'm ready to re-align it, but I have a
question about the whole BFO / Q-Multiplier thing. It says in the manual
that you should put the selectivity control in the maximum clockwise
position for CW and SSB reception. Are they talking about where it activates
the switch, or just at the end of the pot travel??
It's not clear, and the BFO signal is very weak when the control is fully
clockwise, at the point where the switch is actuated. The signals that come
in from the antenna are much stronger than the BFO in this position, so it
is impossible to tune in a CW or SSB signal so it sounds clear. It is a
normally-closed switch, and when you turn the control fully clockwise, it
seems to disconnect the BFO signal from the IF circuitry, even though the
manual says something about making the BFO signal stronger, or something to
that effect.
Am I missing something, or are you just not supposed to click the BFO switch
unless you want to listen to AM?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Al, NE2D
