Hi Arne,
Congratulations on your purchase. You can find lots of info on
SP-600's on The Hammarlund Historian website:
http://www.hammarlund.info
On the SP-600 page, you'll find the following:
"Sept. 1951, SP-600-JX-1, Std. Frequency range 540 khz-54 MHz. Also
designated R-274A/FRR ("Family Radio Receivers") Signal Corps order no.
1689-Phila- 51-01. Note: many early SP-600's were simply designated
SP-600-JX"
so, yours is an early model, probably made in 1951-2.
You should check to see if all the "BBOD" capacitors have been
replaced. There are many in the RF deck, and you can get a look in it
thru the adjustment holes, or if you have an angled inspection mirror,
thru the variable capacitor compartment. Even a visual check will
probably show many of them (the black, tubular capacitors with colored
stripes) to be split open. It may be operable now as-is, but if it has
been used much in recent years, before re-capping, you should check
resistor values, particularly in the plate and screen circuits where leaky
capacitors will cause dropping resistors to run warm and increase in
value.
I started this note earlier, but had to eat breakfast, and now see
that Andy Moorer has written much the same, so this may be some
repetition. He has great manuals for download on his website, in addtion
to the ones on the Historian site, many of which he provided.
