[Hammarlund] TV Baluns again

Several years (5) ago I went down the road of testing a TV balun for my
HQ-120-x receiver. The 120's antenna inputs are designed for 600 ohms and a
50 ohm antenna severely loaded down the input tuned circuits so even RF
alignment wasn't possible. Using my HP606B generator I was able to test
various input balun designs. The TV balun ( I don't know the type ) I used
improved the performance but as I went down in frequency toward 160m the
gain started dropping off pretty signicantly (I don't remember how much).
So I built a 9:1 balun (matching ~50/75 to ~600) with a T50-2 core from
Amidon and it worked much better than the TV core on all bands from 160m to
10m; especially at the lower frequencies. I was also able to complete that
RF alignment with no trouble.
I know I have been hearing that the TV baluns work good so I don't quite
understand why my experience was so different?
73s and good luck, Dennis, k0eoo

For those who are interested Al Tirevold sent me the following sites on
winding your own balun. When I finish I will have a balun capable for both
receiving and transmitting. I'm building a "Tilted Terminated Folded
Dipole" requiring a 16 to 1 balun. The toroid I'm using cost $18.50 and is
suppose to be good for 5kw. When I finish I'll have about $60 in materials
costs. I'm using the Amidon's "K" material for the toroid. A less
expensive material #61 will also work. The 61 toroid is only $9.
