hI Scott,
Yes, you can just replace the slug. To get the old one out, maybe
you'll have to drill it out with progressively larger drills, using finger
pressure with a pin vice. It's fragile (as you've found) & it'll crumble
out pretty easy. Some guys have put in an allen wrench with some epoxy on
it to stick the cracked slug to it & then turn it out. My luck would have
the whole thing solidly glued together. You might be able to get it out
using some alcohol, "EverClear," that's 95% pure, no water, not rubbing
stuff. At least you can spike your fruit juice with it if it doesn't do
the job.
The slugs are basically 2 or 3 different mixes of ferrite, depending
on frequency I think. The IF may be different than the RF coils. AES
used to sell a small asst of slugs, maybe they still do.

I don't know guys. My intimate alignment afternoon with my HQ-180 had
Edsel Murphy written all over it :) I ended up breaking one of the
transformer tuning slugs, plus it sounded like crap when I turned it on,
so I set the radio on the shelf out of frustration. I'll be putting it
back on the bench in a few weeks and starting over. What is the best way
to deal with that broken slug? Can I get replacement slugs or do I have
to replace the transformer?
