First, to quote a friend whom replied direct:

Bob,

You need to read the alignment procedure very carefully and note
that there are two slugs, tuning two bands, in most of the coils. The
alignment procedure usually has you align the band that has the top
(outside) coil first. Then, they have you align the inside, (bottom) coil.
The problem with this is that you must insert the alignment tool completely
through the top coil slug to align the bottom slug. That is ok, but when
you pull it out, you will destroy the alignment of the top coil. The answer
to this is to slightly change the alignment procedure so that you align the
bands with the bottom slugs first, then align the bands with the top slugs.
This way you will not mess up all the work you did on the other band that is
in the same coil.

As to the slug - If you are VERY careful - you MAY be able to remove the pieces and glue it with the very thin water-like CYA glue (Super-Glue). If you get it out but CAN'T repair it, perhaps another slug from another "can" around the shack parts.

You MAY be able to locate one at Antique Electronic Supply, or broadcast a mayday on all the lists.

My intimate alignment afternoon with my HQ-180 had Edsel Murphy written all over it :) I ended up breaking one of the transformer tuning slugs, plus it sounded like crap when I turned it on, so I set the radio on the shelf out of frustration. I'll be putting it back on the bench in a few weeks and starting over. What is the best way to deal with that broken slug? Can I get replacement slugs or do I have to replace the transformer?
